Vintage Law Firm TV Commercial from 1980: Larry H Parker

I love vintage ads as much as modern ones and frequently check out the AdFreak blog on AdWeekhttp://adweek.blogs.com/adfreak/ just for kicks.

While doing some research just now I got a good chuckle from one of Larry's very first TV commercials from 1980.  The office decor and the production quality of the video make it seem like this was made more than 30 years ago, lol

But for some of us old-timers memories of the 80's are still vivid and my wardrobe still has holdovers from then. Well at least Larry has kept up with the times, now he is on facebook, youtube, twitter and blawgging here and here.

Nice work Larry!

Charging Money for FREE News????

I hope it works, but I have been saying for years that its way too outdated a concept to for for NYT and most other media outlets. In specific cases it has applications, like industry specific data, research only useful to small groups, etc...

Also, all of the buzz around the topic should have swayed them in the other direction so I am really interested to see how this pans out. There are soo many alternative news sources out there these days that nothing stays exclusive for more than a few hours.

Good Luck NYT, Yall are Gonna Need It!

Google Ends Censorship in China....

Because of targeted cyber attacks BUT WHAT ABOUT MURDER AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS!!!!

Google's (GOOG) old motto, "Dont Be Evil," must have just been a joke because nothing is more evil than supporting the genocide and ethnic cleansing the Chinese government is blatantly doing to the people of Tibet. And the human rights violations dont end there, the Chinese government is notorious for killing dissidents and activists.

I guess the billions of dollars of prospective income Google hoped to make off the Chinese people outweighed the value of human life.

Discussing the New York State Bar Exam

NYC: New York Supreme Court, Appellate DivisionImage by wallyg via Flickr
Recently we sat down with James Pantelopoulos to discuss online marketing but a very interesting side discussion about the the New York State Bar exam arose.  James, who is also an attorney, is consulting the NYC construction accident attorneys of Edelman & Edelman with their online marketing efforts.  And naturally we went off on a tangent when we found out he was also a lawyer, here are some of his thoughts on the bar exam;

"The New York State bar is one of the hardest tests around, not only do you have to know multi-state laws, you have to know New York State specific laws.

QUESTION: What advice would you give law students about passing the exam?
"Passing the bar is about the thinking process of passing a test more than knowledge of the law.  You have to know the issue, the rule, the application (how you apply the rule to the issue) and then you conclude.

Stay tuned for the rest of the interview but in the meantime tell us what you think about the NY State bar exam....

Bloggers can help the people of Haiti

The reports coming from Haiti are horrible and hard to watch. The people there were really suffering even before this earthquake happened with poverty and poor economic conditions.

My family and I will be doing everything we can to help and we have the Haitian people in our prayers.

If you are able to help, check out this article from Andrew at blogherald.com: What Can Bloggers Do to Help Haiti? http://www.blogherald.com/2010/01/13/what-can-bloggers-do-to-help-haiti/

My Ulcer May Love This!

Image representing Twitter as depicted in Crun...Image via CrunchBase

As a technologist I recite this mantra to all my clients and friends, "Back Ups, Back Ups, Back Ups!" Make sure to have some "on-site" (in your home or office) and make sure to have some "off-site." Do it regularly and disaster recovery becomes much less frustrating. And there are many many reasons you may be disaster recovery mode so take it from me before you learn the hard way.

I am very eager to test this service out NOW!

Wow! Google Gives 20 Million to Several Important Causes...

Google Inc.Image via Wikipedia

Good job Google (GOOG)! I am a big critic of yours but this almost makes up for all of your transgressions, lol

I hope some other companies who consider themselves progressive can follow in your footsteps. And as individuals we can learn a lot from this as well.

As we drink egg nog in front of warm fireplaces its important to remember the billions who live below the poverty line. And its children who suffer the most from poverty; lack of clean drinking water, food, shelter, education.....

No Paid Sick Days for Walmart Workers Who Need it Most

This does not surprise me but I would like to create more awareness about the problem if I can. Walmart has gotten bad press over several issues in the past few years so this is just a drop in the bucket. But if you were one of the affected workers the story would be way different.

This hits close to home also because many of the highly trained technical people I work with daily are "contractors" and dont get paid sick days either. Nor do they get health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance, vacation days... and the list continues.

This NY Times article says this problem may worsen the Flu pandemic but that is far from the only side effect. Parents and families already on the poverty line are hit by this and numerous other jabs while the fat cats on Wall St. got bailed out. When will we learn?

Excellent Marketing Tool I Use Several Times Per Day!!!

Compete.Image via Wikipedia

I love being able to get insights on my competitors and my own sites in one click. Between spyfu.com, compete.com and SEMRush you can get a pretty good understanding of how much reach and marketing dollars a site has. My array of research tools gets much deeper than this though but for a quick snapshot these three are highly useful. I actually checked the numbers and data at these three sites against data from my own campaigns and found that they are pretty accurate. There were slight discrepancies and differences but the overall trends were real and matched up. Do your own research and let me know what you find....

Exposure vs. Reputation Management Problems

I agree Kevin, a short social media policy for your employees, lawyers or not, is necessary because newcomers might not be aware of the pitfalls and doing damage control after the fact is tedious sometimes. And for a company it could be very dangerous.

Making the list too long might discourage some from participating and make you look like big brother. And considering the possible benefits I would try to encourage it as much as possible.

Techmeme is a must for techies!!!

I love Techmeme...

With developments popping up from all corners of the globe it has become hard to stay current as a technologist. I read multiple sources just for tech news and in total I have over 200 feeds in my news feed reader. TechCrunch, Mashable, blue.PoPurls.com are my main sources after I check whats hot on Techmeme.

And while I am talking about news again I have to give another shout out to http://newsmap.jp/# - This site makes scanning top news almost fun.

Funny Parody of the Famous Larry H Parker TV Commercials

Parody of Larry H. Parker Commercial

Seth | MySpace Video

This is worth a gander if you are familiar with Larry's TV ads. For those of you who aren't, Larry H Parker is an accident attorney in Los Angeles who has been producing TV commercials for about 30 years now.

The amusing parts come from Larry's clients who are on the ads with their testimonials and the best way to illustrate the humor is to check out this parody: http://video.aol.co.uk/video-detail/parody-of-larry-h-parker-commercial/1432176094

PopURLs is the new AP!

I am a big traditional news junkie. Newspapers, Magazines, CNN, MSNBC and everything in between. I even worked for a few big publishers and learned a thing or two about the process. And to a small extent I have to report and deliver specific types of news, so bashing traditional media is not my hobby.

These days news aggregation sites and RSS readers are thought to be the best way to get news the way you want it, but my never ending quest for the best source has left me here at PopURLs.com and NewsMap.jp.

Check them out and let me know what you think.

Also, I am very open to suggestions if anyone has something better. I also like the various topics at alltop.com if you need news on specific subjects.

Defense Contractors Stealing from Taxpayers, AGAIN

Seal of the United States Government Accountab...Image via Wikipedia

Defense Contractor Will Pay $25 Million For Fraud: "A defense contractor has agreed to pay a fine and damages totaling $25 million to resolve allegations that it overcharged the government for more than a decade"

Not that this is news to anyone considering the no-bid contracts halliburton and blackwater have been taking fire for, but it appears that this has been going on for a long time. "...1863, President Abraham Lincoln and the Congress enacted this law to combat defense procurement fraud in which unscrupulous defense contractors were billing the Union Army for dead mules, boots with soles that had glued on, rather than stitched (and were coming apart in the rain and mud), and gunpowder that had been salted down with sawdust." ....Says Don Warren

To me this is the same as truckloads of cash money disappearing in Iraq without a trace. With all the red tape and paperwork the U.S. Government Accountability Office should be able to find instances of theft from years and years ago!!!
